Five Goring Facts

A piece of the Sistine Chapel

Hidden away in Goring is the English Martyrs’ Catholic Church, home to an incredible 100-foot hand-painted ceiling inspired by the Sistine Chapel. Created by local parishioner Gary Bevans between 1987 and 1993, following a pilgrimage to Rome, this stunning replica of Michelangelo’s masterpiece is mathematically perfect in its proportions and is an awe-inspiring tribute to Renaissance art – it is well worth a visit.

Billy Idol’s early days

Long before he hit the global stage, punk legend Billy Idol – real name William Broad – spent part of his early life in Goring. Local stories claim his iconic stage name came from a teacher who once branded him “idle” at school.

The Who and Goring Beach

Goring Beach has its own slice of rock history. It’s said to have inspired parts of Quadrophenia, the legendary album by Pete Townshend of The Who – adding a coastal soundtrack to British music heritage.

A taste of the sea

Once a bustling centre for fishing and farming, Goring had a surprise economic boost in 1823 when an oyster bed was discovered just offshore. Fishermen, already skilled at catching herring and mackerel quickly adapted to the new delicacy.

What’s in a name?

The “by-Sea” part was added to distinguish it from Goring-on-Thames in South Oxfordshire. It’s a small change, but one that highlights the village’s coastal charm and gives it a name as distinctive as the place itself.

Local Flavours

Sea Lane Cafe

A much-loved spot among locals and visitors, Sea Lane Café sits right on the seafront and serves generous breakfasts and seasonal lunches to locally baked pastries.

“Sea Lane Café is the perfect place to pause for a coffee and a 99 ice cream – with a flake – while soaking up sea views. It’s always a talking point with clients relocating to the area, especially those walking the scenic route from Worthing to Ferring.” – Anna Currey, Director

The Bluebird Cafe

Another gem right on the beachfront but this is in Ferring village. The Bluebird offers delicious breakfasts, lunches, and takeaway fish and chips. With its relaxed atmosphere and friendly service, it’s a favourite all year round – ideal for a sunny seaside lunch or a cosy winter coffee. Dogs are welcome, too.

Marine Gardens Café and Bowls

Set within Worthing’s charming Marine Gardens, this popular café is a lovely spot to take a break – plus it’s wheelchair accessible and dog-friendly too.

“For those who enjoy spending time outside and pretty gardens, a walk along the promenade to Marine Gardens is the perfect way to unwind. It’s one of my favourite spots to enjoy a leisurely stroll and share a coffee with friends.” – Jenny Murphy

The Highdown

Built in 1820 and set within the Downs, The Highdown combines traditional British dining with a relaxed café atmosphere. Enjoy local ales and a wide selection of gins and malts, or relax in one of the cosy, light-filled rooms. Outside, a sunny terrace and a charming Tea Room provide the perfect spots for afternoon tea after exploring the Highdown Gardens next door.

Local Life In Goring

The Great Little Farmers Market

Held on the first Saturday of every month from March through to December (9am–2pm). A well-loved fixture in the local calendar, full of locally produced goods, artisan food and wonderful small, independent businesses.

“Who doesn’t love a market? It’s one my favourite places to find bespoke items and treats from independent traders – I’d recommend the vegan doughnuts and locally produced rum.” – Juliette Hedges, Senior Negotiator

Goring Gap

Best known as a go-to destination for a classic family day out, with its huge open green space that is metres from the beach. Ideal for picnics, games, BBQs and relaxing walks.

“As an avid runner, I love the fact that the seafront promenade is flat and huge here. The Saturday morning parkrun, starting at The Pier, up to Goring before turning back, is the perfect way to stay active and enjoy the sea views.” – Wayne Kenward, Director

Worthing Sailing Club and local water sports

A vibrant hub for sailing enthusiasts of all abilities. Their Club House and active social calendar makes for a great community. The open coastline and steady breeze make it a popular spot for kitesurfing, jet skiing and wakeboarding.

Local leisure facilities

The area boasts an abundance of leisure activities to suit all interests and ages. From the modern facilities at Worthing Leisure Centre and David Lloyd to the popular Worthing Tennis Club – which also offers the trendy sport of padel. Nearby, you can enjoy bowls, pétanque and beautiful outdoor spaces at Field Place.

“I’m a big fan of the South Downs Fit4 facilities – great activities for children from athletics, football, gymnastics to trampolining. So the kids can have fun whilst I work out in the gym, a perfect way to unwind after a busy day in the office.” – Michael Walton,

Highdown Gardens

If you’re looking for a lovely spot to unwind, Highdown Gardens on the edge of Worthing is hard to beat. Spread over 8½ acres with stunning sea views, it’s perfect for a picnic, a leisurely stroll, or even joining a guided tour. With charming areas like the Chalk Pit, Rose Garden, and Sensory Garden, there’s always something new to discover – and best of all, it’s free to explore!

“There’s nothing better than escaping the day-to-day hustle with a wander around Highdown Gardens alongside my dog who loves the fish in the pond. We often continue up to the South Downs before finishing off with a quick pit stop at the Highdown Restaurant.” – Josh Lepine, Sales Manager
